Alcohol (mis)use at work functions

At our recent work function for company staff at a private outside venue, a few of the staff members had... too much to drink and became loud, inappropriate and even offensive, to the point where a number of the other staff members left the function early. Afterwards a number of staff complained to me about the conduct of these staff members. How do I manage this and avoid similar situations arising at the next function?

Sorry sir, no wine tonight!

Ever been to your favourite restaurant and ordered a beer or a glass of wine, only to be told “Sorry,... unfortunately we cannot serve alcohol at this time as we are still awaiting renewal of our liquor license!” Unfortunately, this scenario happens quite often, leaving patrons dry-mouthed and wondering why the restaurant has not renewed their liquor license. The application for or renewal of a liquor license can however be a complex process and one that should be undertaken timeously to avoid situations such as these. Herewith some basic information for existing or prospective restaurateurs, pub, club or tavern owners.

The new Control of Marketing of Alcohol Beverages Bill

More than half of the country's road deaths occur as a result of alcohol abuse according to the Department of... Transport. Social Development Minister, Bathabile Dlamini, has said that South Africa has some of the highest foetal alcohol syndrome figures in the world. And this is to name but a few of the issues we are currently facing in South Africa due to the misuse of alcohol. The draft Control of Marketing of Alcohol Beverages Bill is yet to be gazetted for comment although most have already expressed their opinion on the proposed Bill despite very little information being available regarding its scope and impact.
